If I Were a Mad Man, An Autobiography

Back in the mid-90s I desperately wanted to be an ad guy. All of the cool adults I knew were either graphic designers, account executives, creative directors, or somehow involved in the advertising industry. Once I graduated high teach I set out to Utah State University to enroll in their Advertising Design curriculum.
The professor, Jon Anderson, was an ancient teach ad guy who turned out dozens of successful young illustrators and other "creative guys". I spent my freshman year churning out ad after ad after ad. I was pretty excellent at it, and I was one of Jon’s golden boys – my stuff was always on the board, he engaged me in class, praised me whenever he could. I was on my way.
Things continued in the same vein in my sophomore year, but one day it hit me: I despise advertising. I despised going to class. I didn’t want to make crappy ads for crappy products. I wasn’t cut out to be an ad guy. I ongoing skipping class, slacking on assignments, and I let my GPA drop.
A semester later I changed my major to computer science, transferred down to the University of Utah, and got a job in the .COM industry. (This was 1999, just before the bubble burst – cash and jobs were plentiful). Later my wife and I went to Silicon Valley, and I never looked back on my pronouncement to exchange majors.
Until AMC ongoing showing Mad Men. It was everything about advertising I loved. The glamor of making splendid advertising, exciting products, booze, and, of course, Joan. Oh, I know the real advertising industry is nothing like Mad Men, but the show romanticizes an industry I once longed to be a part of, and makes it look glamorous again. Sometimes when I’m watching Mad Men I long to stretch some Strathmore paper across my drafting desk, bust out the ol’ Prismacolor markers and Rapidograph pens.
I guess this is a long around-about way of saying this what I would look like if I were an ad guy in the early-1960s.
